10 Tips and Tricks for Traveling with a Medically Complex Child:
- Let your child’s doctor(s) know ahead of time that you will be traveling.
- Identify the nearest hospital/doctor in network with your insurance ahead of time in case of emergency.
- Pack extra medications, important supplies, or anything else you won’t be able to conveniently find at a local store.
- Prepare your child ahead of time by talking with them about the trip, what they can expect and how things may be different than home.
- If flying, be sure to keep medications and critical supplies in your carry-on bag. Remember—medical supplies and equipment fly free! Just be sure to take pictures beforehand in case anything is damaged.
- Create a folder or info sheet with your child’s medical history, diagnoses, medications, allergies, doctors’ info, etc.
- Call the airline and/or living accommodations ahead of time to gather information on accessibility and any accommodations that they offer.
- Pack some of your child’s favorite things and something that brings them comfort. Ex: a blanket, toy, headphones, book, tablet, etc.
- Consider travel insurance and/or refundable options.
- Give yourself and your child grace! It’s easy to get overwhelmed out of your normal routine but try to embrace the opportunity to spend time together in a new environment.
