5 Halloween Tips for Medically Complex Families:Â
- Prepare your child ahead of time for what they can expect or may see (costumes, loud noises, special effects), so that they aren’t afraid. You can even do a trial run or make them a printed schedule of events for the night!
- Double check their costume! Make sure that they will be comfortable most of the night and that there are no tripping hazards. You don’t want to pick something that will limit their mobility or cause them anxiety.
- If you’re handing things out, have something other than edible treats. Not all children can eat by mouth, or some may have dietary restrictions. Providing something like bouncy balls, fidget toys, glow bracelets, stickers, bubbles, etc. This will ensure that anyone who comes to your door will have an option to choose from!
- Find inclusive events! Just like JJMF’s Not-So-Haunted-House (have you registered yet?!), many times there are free, local Halloween events catering to families of children with disabilities. Do your research and see which one sounds like a fun evening for your family!
- Remember to be flexible! If your child gets overstimulated, has a costume mishap, or are just not enjoying themselves, that’s completely fine! The goal of the evening is for everyone to have fun, but that doesn’t mean you need to suffer through 3 hours of misery if your child isn’t happy. You can always try again next year!
